Twin Win is an Icehouse game for 2 to 3 players designed by Andy Looney to be easily played while standing in line. Players manipulate shared pieces on a 3x3 board until one player completes one of their two hidden goals, hence the name Twin Win.

Materials Needed[edit | edit source]

  • Blank index cards / sheets of paper (or custom-produced Twin Win cards)
  • A 3x3 board (or a custom Twin Win board)
  • 15 pyramids in 5 different colors

Objective[edit | edit source]

Be the first to meet one of your two secret objectives by moving pyramids on a 3x3 grid.

Setup[edit | edit source]

  • If you don't have pre-printed Twin Win cards, simply use index cards or whatever you paper you have around. On ten cards, write the names of whatever colors of pyramids you are using, followed by the words "tree" and "nest." For instance, if one of your colors were Red, you would write "Red Nest" on one card and "Red Tree" on another. Do this until you have 10 cards.
  • Set these out next to the 3x3 board.
  • Spread all 25 pyramids out on the table and begin making 5 trees semi-randomly. Each tree must contain three colors. It doesn't matter which colors, but no two pyramids are allowed to be the same color for these initial trees.
  • Set four of the trees in the four corners of the 3x3 board, and place the last tree in the center square.
  • Deal each player two secret objective cards.

Game Play[edit | edit source]

  • On your turn, you may do a total of two actions. The options are:
    1. Move the top pyramid of any stack one space.
    2. Switch out your secret objective card for a face-down card from the stack.

The actions can be the same or split however you like. For instance, you can draw a new objective card and then move a pyramid, or your can move one pyramid and then move a different pyramid on another part of the board, or you can move the same pyramid twice.

Board Movement Restrictions[edit | edit source]

Movement on the board is restricted in certain ways. Pyramids in corner spaces must move clockwise. Pyramids in the four squares surrounding the center can also move clockwise, but they have the option of moving inward, to the center space. Pyramids in the center may move to any of the four surrounding squares. No pieces may ever move diagonally or counter-clockwise.

Permitted Movement Directions: Pyramids in corner spaces must move clockwise (green arrows). Pyramids in the four squares surrounding the center may move either clockwise or in toward the center (pink arrows). Pyramids in the center may move to any of the four surrounding squares (blue arrows). No pieces may ever move diagonally or counter-clockwise.

Winning[edit | edit source]

If you manage to create the tree or nest called for on one of your secret objective cards on your turn, you win. But you can even win when it's someone else's turn. If your opponent forms a tree or nest that matches one of your objectives, immediately show your objective card and announce your victory. Your tree or nest can be on top of other pyramids and/or below them and the victory still counts. As long as all three pyramids in the color on your objective card are touching each other form a tree or nest, the condition is met and you are the winner.

Example win for the player who has the green nest objective. Also a win for the player who has the green nest objective.
